NSW midwife workforce grows by 10 per cent
THE number of midwives working in NSW has increased by more than 10 per cent since June 2023, with more than 3,400 full-time equivalent midwives now employed statewide.
The NSW Government has invested an additional $83M to improve maternity care, including expanding continuity-of-care models and employing more regional midwives.
Twenty new or expanded midwifery continuity programs have been established since 2024, alongside new homebirth services.
Communities are now being invited to help shape the Statewide Maternity Services Plan, which will guide public maternity care for the next five to 10 years.
An online survey is open until September 20, with the plan expected to be finalised by December 2026.
